Nursing at The Royal Melbourne Hospital
When The Royal Melbourne Hospital first opened its doors 170 years ago it was with 10 beds, a matron, two nurses, medical and domestic staff.
Today, we operate across two major campuses, in Melbourne city and Parkville, with more than 1000 beds. More than 40% of our people are nurses. We are also a part of the broader Melbourne Health network which includes Victoria’s largest mental health service, North Western Mental Health.
As a major tertiary hospital The Royal Melbourne Hospital offers a vast range of clinical speciality areas and a supportive culture. We know that our nurses join us for a range of different reasons and at different stages of their career. Whether you are beginning or advancing your career we’re always happy to have a conversation about what nursing with our team might mean to you.
As an organisation, the way we work together to achieve our vision is guided by our values of caring, respect, unity, integrity and excellence. We are committed to living our values in everything we do and building a positive, safe, patient focused culture to be a great place to work and a great place to be cared for.

Knowing this, we are proud to invest in our nurses to help them develop and grow their careers via learning opportunities, fellowships and more.
We also know that, for many of our nurses, there’s an ongoing balance between career aspiration and juggling the demands of everyday life. To support, we offer our nurses a comprehensive range of career opportunities, resources and employment options to meet their individual needs.
