The BAC is a specialist service for the assessment of spinal disorders and assistance in ongoing management.
The BAC is a specialist service formed by collaboration between Rheumatology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics and Pain Services at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The service is linked with community sites within Merri Health.
The service offers a comprehensive assessment and management advice regarding neck and back pains and any associated symptoms, such as radiculopathy.
The service can assist in further investigations, analgesic review (including injection therapies) and physiotherapy services, as well as onward access to surgical, rheumatological and pain management services.
The clinics are staffed by a Rheumatologist and Advanced Practice Physiotherapists, the same professionals that you may see in the Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic or Rheumatology clinics at Royal Melbourne Hospital. All of these staff members have extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of back and neck problems
The service can assist with persistent spinal pain, cervical and lumbar radiculopathy, and neurogenic claudication symptoms from spinal stenosis.
Exclusions to the service are suspicion of ‘red flag’ pathologies (tumours, infection, fracture, and inflammatory disease), spinal deformity and paediatric cases.
We accept referrals for this service.
Referrals are triaged depending on priority. Emergency cases can present to the Emergency & Trauma Service at any time.
If surgery is required, your patient may need to attend a Pre-Admission Clinic prior to their procedure.
To refer a patient, complete and send your referral by fax to (03) 9342 4234.
