A much loved and respected member of staff, Dr Henderson graduated MBBS in 1938 and, following wartime medical service, became an honorary physician in 1947 and member of the SMS from 1959 to her retirement in 1981.

She received an OBE for her services to medicine in 1976 and was a highly regarded specialist in thoracic medicine as well as an outstanding teacher much sought after by medical students and residents.

In December 2005, she was made Consultant Emeritus, becoming only the second person to receive this honour since the title was introduced by the Melbourne Health Board in 2003.
