Congratulations to RMH neurologist, Professor John King, who received a 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours on Monday.

Prof John King

Prof King received a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to medicine as a neurologist, to medical education, to Multiple Sclerosis research, and to professional organisations.

Prof King has had a wide range of senior responsibilities both within the RMH and at a national level. He was the Chairman of the Senior Medical Staff at the RMH 1993-1995, chaired the Research Trust Fund of the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria 1987-1993 and served as a member of the Eastern Healthcare Board 1995-1996 and then the Inner and Eastern Healthcare Board 1996-2000.

His main focus in recent years has been in the conduct of trials to evaluate new therapeutic agents in MS as part of multinational and multicentre research programs funded by pharmaceutical companies. He has been the principal investigator in Australia of many important MS trials and has been an excellent mentor for other MS researchers including Prof Trevor Kilpatrick (Director of the Melbourne Neuroscience Institute) and A/Prof Helmut Butzkueven (Co-Director of the MS Unit at the RMH). He is an active senior member of the Department of Neurology, where his experience and clinical acumen are highly regarded by his younger colleagues.

In his nomination letter, Professor Stephen Davis, Director Neurology at the RMH, said Prof King is a skilled teacher at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

“John is regarded by his colleagues as a modest, friendly and caring man,” Prof Davis said.

“He is held in the highest esteem by both his colleagues and patients. He has been a leader of neurology in Australia, a leader in the Australian involvement in the important clinical MS trials that have changed the treatment for this condition and continues to make important continuing contributions as a clinical neurologist and as Chairman of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Foundation.

“On a personal level, he is exceptionally modest and a person of outstanding integrity, also a great family man and highly regarded by all.”
