The Royal Melbourne Hospital has been appointed as the first statewide service to pioneer the roll out of a new breakthrough treatment, Endovascular Clot Retrieval (ECR), for stroke in Victoria.

Endovascular Clot Retrieval is now recognised by leading experts around the world as the most effective way to treat acute ischemic stroke patients, giving them the best chance of a full recovery.

A new era in gluten free foods is around the corner thanks to world first research that started at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.

Scientists from the CSIRO, with co-funding from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), have bred the Kebari grain, a new barley variety with ultra-low levels of hordeins, the type of gluten found in barley.

MULTIPLE gene panel testing may be a cheaper, more accessible way to investigate the heritability of breast cancer, but it comes with ethical issues, according to a Clinical Focus published today in the Medical Journal of Australia.

The Royal Melbourne Hosptial’s new Essendon Fields Dialysis Service was officially opened last week by the local member for Essendon, Mr Danny Pearson.

The new facility offers 15 dialysis stations and two consulting rooms for a nephrology outpatient service. The addition of an outpatients clinic enables patients to attend the facility for associated appointments close to their home, reducing the need to travel to the busy precinct around the Royal Melbourne Hospital campus.

In response to the media enquiry from Mr Justin Smith regarding Mr Desmond Ponting, Melbourne Health provided him with the following statement:

Staff across Melbourne Health were deeply saddened to hear about the sudden death of their colleague, Desmond Ponting. Melbourne Health expressed its condolences to Mr Ponting’s husband and family at the time.

The tragic death of Mr Ponting is currently being investigated by the Victorian Coroner and to ensure that the investigation is not compromised we are not able to provide further comment.
