Background When one speaks of global health, there are few issues that actually have a health impact globally rather than in just one or more regions of the world or in a specific population. When truly thinking globally, among the most important global health issues affecting large segments of the world's populations is the persistence of vaccine-preventable diseases.

BECN1/Beclin 1 has a critical role in the early stages of autophagosome formation. Recently, structures of its central and C-terminal domains were reported, however, little structural information is available on the N-terminal domain, comprising a third of the protein. This lack of structural information largely stems from the inability to produce this region in a purified form.

Neurocognitive impairment in Huntington's disease (HD) frequently includes deficits in emotion recognition, and recent studies have also provided evidence for deficits in theory of mind (ToM). There have been conflicting reports regarding the extent of emotion recognition and ToM deficits before the onset of motor symptoms in HD.

Evidence from experimental animal studies convincingly argues for a role of pro-inflammatory cytokines due to surgical trauma in causing postoperative cognitive dysfunction. However, other studies have shown exposure to 2-4 h of isoflurane anesthetic without surgical trauma can also impair cognitive function.

The past few decades have seen a marked change in the composition of commonly smoked cannabis. These changes primarily involve an increase of the psychoactive compound Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and a decrease of the potentially therapeutic compound cannabidiol (CBD).

One of the major projects of the Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT) is to promote hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in emerging countries in the world. For these countries, HLA haploidentical HSCT (haplo-HSCT) from family members is an attractive approach because of its cost effectiveness.

Bone marrow (BM) is the preferred graft source for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in severe aplastic anemia (SAA) compared with mobilized peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs). We hypothesized that this recommendation may not apply to those regions where patients present later in their disease course, with heavier transfusion load and with higher graft failure rates.
