The Royal Melbourne Hospital's Professor Alistair Royse has been awarded the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons' 2022 Sir Louis Barnett Medal.

Professor Royse, a Royal Melbourne cardiothoracic surgeon and Director of eLearning technologies for Melbourne Medical School at the University of Melbourne, was presented with the honour at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the College in recognition of his outstanding contribution to education, training and advancement in surgery.

Professor Royse pioneered the use of arterial coronary bypass grafts and complex arterial reconstructions, radically changing the practice of coronary care in Australia. He has also been involved in the development of clinical ultrasound, including intraoperative ultrasound, and oversees an eLearning ultrasound education program.

The honour is named for Sir Louis Barnett, a New Zealand surgeon and founder of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
