Associate Professor Irani Thevarajan commenced as Chief Medical Officer of the Royal Melbourne Hospital in July 2026. Irani is an infectious disease physician and an active Senior Staff Specialist at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Service, and a level D honorary principal clinical fellow at University of Melbourne.
Irani has built a distinguished career combining clinical infectious diseases practice, research, leadership and global health, with particular expertise in emerging infectious diseases, travel medicine, antimicrobial stewardship and pandemic preparedness. As Deputy Divisional Director for Medical Services at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, she provided leadership across 14 specialty units and has played a key role in strengthening clinical governance, quality and safety, and the delivery of patient-centred care across our organisation.
A recognised clinician-researcher, Irani leads and collaborates on major research programs focused on emerging infectious diseases. She is the lead investigator of the Sentinel Travellers and Research Preparedness for Emerging Infectious Disease (SETREP-ID) platform, which was among Australia's first research programs mobilised during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her work contributed to one of the earliest published studies describing immune responses in a patient recovering from COVID-19, helping to advance global understanding of the disease.
In addition to her research leadership, Irani is committed to education and international health. She has played an active role in the Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene program coordinated through the University of Melbourne and partner organisations, supporting the development of future clinicians and researchers in infectious diseases and global health.
Through her clinical, research, education and executive leadership roles, Irani continues to make significant contributions to infectious diseases medicine, strengthening patient care, clinical excellence and preparedness for future health threats both within Victoria and internationally.
