Associate Professor Stefan Heinze is Director, Medical Imaging at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he has been a consultant radiologist since 2002 and was Deputy Director from 2008 to 2020.

Stefan trained in Radiology at The Alfred hospital and completed Fellowship training in chest and body imaging at UCLA Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York.

His two main areas of interest are thoracic imaging and genitourinary imaging. He established the Respiratory Medicine and Interstitial Lung Disease Meetings at the RMH, founded VicSTI (the Victorian Society of Thoracic Imaging), is co-founder/chair of ANZSTR (Australian and New Zealand Society of Thoracic Radiology) and is the Australian representative on the STR Intersociety and Global Outreach Committee.

In addition, he introduced prostate MRI (2002) and the MRI-guided in-bore prostate biopsy service (2016) and established the image-guided renal ablation service at the RMH in 2002. Stefan is passionate about public health and providing a high quality medical imaging service to the patients and staff of the RMH.
