Patients, consumers, carers, community members and staff came together to launch the first Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Community Engagement Strategy today.
The ‘All in This Together’ Strategy aims to build a strong, inclusive community to make healthcare equitable and accessible for everyone, with three strategic pillars – create cultural safety, build mutual trust, and use an intersectional approach – as the basis for focus areas of actionable change across the RMH.
Community Engagement Manager Jenny Barr said more than 350 people had shared their experiences and perspectives to create the Strategy. The consultation process included a partnership with the Australian Multicultural Health Collaborative, with workshops, surveys and interviews.
“This was a truly collaborative project that reflects the diversity of the community we live in and care for at the Royal Melbourne,” Jenny said.
“What we heard through the process is that we need to make healthcare a more welcoming environment that can respond to an individual person’s needs and values. We will continue to work with our community as this Strategy is now put into practice, to fulfil our purpose of advancing health for everyone, every day.”
The RMH Consumer Engagement Strategy is available in English, Easy Read, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Italian, Vietnamese, Arabic and Turkish.
