Five current and former staff members of the RMH have been recognised in the 26 January Honours List.

Emeritus Professor John Wark, former chief executive Linda Sorrell, past executive directors Christine Fitzherbert and Sharon McGowan and former board member Gregory Johnson were all acknowledged for their significant service to healthcare, medicine and the community.

Professor Wark was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and applauded for his “significant service to medicine, particularly endocrinology, as a clinician, educator, and mentor”. He has a long and highly regarded history at the RMH as an esteemed endocrinologist and has also served as head of bone and mineral medicine.

Ms Sorrell, who was chief executive between 2007 and 2011, was also awarded an AM for her “significant service to health administration through a range of roles”.

Ms McGowan, who served as the executive director of communications and community relations from 2010 to 2016, received an honorary AM for her incredible “service to community health, particularly stroke prevention and awareness”.

And Mr Johnson, a previous board member, was given an AM for “significant service to community health through diabetes governance, reform and education”.

Meanwhile Ms Fitzherbert was recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for “service to the community through a range of organisations”. She was the executive director of human resources and organisational development at the hospital between 2007 and 2016.

Congratulations to all recipients. We are extremely proud of our staff and the commitment they make to advancing health for everyone, every day.
