Our Transcultural and Interpreter Services team provides professionally certified interpreting services to help you communicate with staff and be involved in your care throughout your stay at the hospital and at your hospital appointments.
We have a strong commitment to providing safe patient care for all of our patients. Interpreting services at the hospital are provided by professionally certified interpreters to facilitate the communication between you and your medical treating team either in person, via video conference, or over the phone.
Interpreters
We provide interpreting services in more than 160 languages, including Auslan (Australian Sign Language).
How to organise an interpreter for your next hospital visit
Tell us when you make your appointment or when you arrive that you need an interpreter. You, your family or support person can ask for an interpreter at any point during your stay or appointment.
Hospital staff can arrange an interpreter for you.
If there are no in-person interpreters available at your appointment time, we can contact a telephone interpreter service 24 hours a day (including after hours, weekends and public holidays) to help.
Cultural support
When you are admitted to the hospital, let us know if you have any specific cultural requirements.
Faith or religion
Our Spiritual Care team can arrange a visit by representatives of most faith traditions.
Specific dietary requirements
Tell us if you have specific dietary requirements such as halal, kosher or vegetarian, and any allergies.
LGBTIQA+
Our LGBTIQA+ Patient Liaison service provides direct support for LGBTIQA+ people and their families receiving care through the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH). We do this by:
- Assessing and responding to patient safety and inclusion needs
- Liaising with multidisciplinary teams to support best practice
- Providing peer support
- Conducting capacity building for staff
The team can provide preadmission support and support for LGBTIQA+ people to navigate hospital systems. We welcome direct referrals from people using RMH services, as well as referrals from care teams.
