The RMH’s Professor Geoff Lindeman, a trailblazer in breast cancer research, has been announced as the joint winner of the 2024 Buchanan Medal.

The accolade is awarded by the UK’s prestigious Royal Society and recognises outstanding contributions to biomedical science.

Prof Linderman received the honour alongside his WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research) colleague Professor Jane Visvader.

A medical oncologist at the RMH and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Prof Linderman is also the joint-head of the ACRF Cancer Biology and Stem Cells Division at WEHI - a role he shares with Prof Visvader.

Prof Lindeman said the team’s focus was on treatments and prevention strategies for women at high risk of breast cancer.

“New technologies, coupled with the development of new drugs, promise to advance our understanding of breast cancer further and should lead to more refined, personalised approaches to therapy,” he said.

“This is likely to improve outcomes for breast cancer patients and their families – a future we can look to with hope and optimism.”

For over 25 years, Prof Linderman and Prof Visvader have led groundbreaking research, uncovering critical insights into the cells that cause cancer in women with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations.

Their work is paving the way for new, personalised treatments that bring hope to breast cancer patients.

It is only the third time an Australian has won the Buchanan Medal since it began in 1897 - and the first time it has been given to dual winners.

Congratulations to both Prof Linderman and Prof Visvader!
