The accolade was awarded by the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) at the 30th ISH Scientific Congress in Cartagena, Colombia, in recognition of Prof Harrap’s lifetime of global contributions made in hypertension research at the highest level.
A General Medicine consultant physician at the RMH and Professor Emeritus at the University of Melbourne, Stephen Harrap has long-standing research interests in the genetics of common cardiovascular conditions with contributions in both man and experimental models.
He has also played a major role in international clinical trials of stroke prevention (PROGRESS) and cardiovascular protection in diabetes (ADVANCE) respectively and is a past President of the International Society of Hypertension and the High Blood Pressure Research Council of Australia.
Announcing the award, the ISH acknowledged Prof Harrap as “a pioneer in the field of hypertension genetics and one of the few people in the world whose work has spanned the spectrum of both experimental and clinical genetics.” It is only the third time an Australian has been awarded this honour since it was first given 50 years ago.
The RMH congratulates Professor Harrap on this exceptional achievement.
