The Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA) has awarded the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Professor Geoff Hebbard with the Outstanding Clinician Award 2020.
The GESA Outstanding Clinician Award recognises a member's outstanding contribution to clinical gastroenterology and hepatology. The focus is this award is to recognise mentorship and clinical excellence over many years of practice.
Professor Hebbard was nominated for the award by his colleagues, who describe Professor Hebbard’s dedication to his field.
“His dedication to his role is shown through his physical presence in the hospital; he is the first to arrive and last to leave every day.”
Professor Hebbard was also pivotal in the establishment of the Nurse Endoscopist Program at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH), a framework that has not only supported a new breed of emerging endoscopy clinicians but also provided a pathway for greater access to endoscopy for the greater Victorian community.
He runs the functional gastrointestinal unit at the RMH which provides state of the art care with a specialised nutrition nurse and a dietitian.
A hallmark of Professor Hebbard’s career to date has been his mentorship and advocacy for early-career clinicians and trainees.
He has supported the career development and of countless gastroenterologists and PhD students who have become gastroenterologists and post docs.
“Professor Hebbard is one of a few great all-rounders - a clinician, a researcher, a teacher and a leader. However, he is far too modest to make any claim and therefore we have put him forward for this recognition as an outstanding clinician.”
Congratulations Professor Hebbard – a great recognition of your service to the RMH and the wider community.
