Congratulations to the RMH’s Professor Ben Thomson, who has been named the new Victorian Chief Surgical Advisor. Prof Thomson is the current Medical Director of Surgical Services and Head of General Surgical Specialities.

A Hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB), general and trauma surgeon, Prof Thomson is also a Clinical Professor at the University of Melbourne and a board member of the Australian & New Zealand HPB Association. He has previously been the head of the emergency general surgical service and HPB & UGI unit, Director of the Upper GI Tumour Stream across the RMH and acting Director of the Trauma Service.

Prior external positions have included being an examiner in General Surgery for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons & chair of the Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (CCRTGE).

Originally a medical graduate of the University of Melbourne, Ben trained at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and was awarded his fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2001. He then completed further specialist training in HPB surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh before commencing as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. He completed a Doctor of Medical Science at the University of Melbourne in 2013.
