Professor Nigel Toussaint is the Deputy Director of Nephrology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH). 

He is also the lead physician for haemodialysis within the Department of Nephrology and the RMH Kidney Care service, and has an honorary appointment as Clinical Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Melbourne.

Nigel graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1997 and completed advanced training in Nephrology (FRACP) in Melbourne in 2005. He completed a PhD through Monash University in 2009, undertaking clinical research in vascular calcification and cardiovascular risk in people with chronic kidney disease. He completed a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Epidemiology in 2007, and has also completed a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) National Institute of Clinical Science Fellowship in implementation research.

He has previously worked at Western Health (2006-13) and Monash Medical Centre (2009-12). He has been a consultant nephrologist at the RMH since 2007.

Nigel currently supervises postgraduate students with ongoing research in chronic kidney disease. Research interests include mineral and bone metabolism in kidney disease, reducing cardiovascular risk in kidney disease and variation in nephrology care with the use of quality indicators to improve nephrology service delivery. He is co-author of national and international nephrology guidelines and has numerous publications (more than 130) in peer-review international journals.
