Mr Peter Skillington is the Director, Cardiothoracic Surgery at the RMH. Peter graduated from the University of Tasmania. He trained in general surgery at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne. He trained in cardiothoracic surgery at The Alfred and Royal Children’s Hospital as well as the Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane.
Peter pioneered the ROSS procedure for aortic valve replacement in Australia and is now a world expert. His other main area of interest is in adult congenital cardiac surgery, an area in which he has performed over 900 congenital cardiac surgery procedures since he started working at the RMH in the 1990’s.
He has published more than 50 peer review articles, and is frequently invited to speak at major meetings both in Australia and internationally. He has previously been president of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (ANZSCTS), and has also been Chair of the Cardiothoracic surgical training RACS Board, and has served as a fellowship examiner with RACS. He has also served on numerous RACS and ANZSCTS sub committees.
