Professor Spiros Fourlanos is Director of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology and based at the University of Melbourne.
He is passionate about advancing care for people with diabetes and his specific research areas of interest including type 1 diabetes, atypical forms of diabetes and inpatient diabetes care. In acute care he oversaw the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) becoming the first Australian Hospital to institute a fully networked blood glucose monitoring system.
As the clinical director he works with a large clinical, research and administrative team who have enabled the RMH Diabetes and Endocrinology to be awarded an Australian Diabetes Society (ADS) National Association Diabetes Centre of Excellence and ranked in the top 40 endocrinology clinical departments globally in the Statista Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals Survey.
Spiros obtained his medical degree at the University of Melbourne and completed a PhD at the University of Melbourne Walter and Eliza Hall Institute on ‘Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA): New Clinical, Immunogenetic and Metabolic Perspectives’ supervised by Professors Len Harrison and Peter Colman.
He is currently a co-stream lead in the University of Melbourne Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes Innovations (ACADI) research collaborative.
Spiros is an author on 200 peer-reviewed publications and has been an investigator in over 40 randomised clinical trials. Prof Fourlanos has channeled his energy to the problem of diabetes in the acute care setting and overseen RAPIDS, STOIC-D Surgery, STOIC-D Medicine which are amongst the largest whole of hospital randomised trials globally in people with diabetes.
Spiros has been involved in national leadership roles as a previous ADS board member and honorary treasurer. He is currently the co-chair of the ADS In-Hospital Diabetes Sub-committee and driving the Australian National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (AusNaDIA) initiative, a key future national benchmarking activity.
