The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) is marking the International Day of People with a Disability with the launch of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, a global initiative designed to support individuals living with invisible disabilities.
The program, a collaboration with the Royal Women’s Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, will begin at RMH and the Royal Women’s Hospital on 3 December, with Peter Macallum Cancer Centre set to join in 2025.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program uses the sunflower symbol to make invisible disabilities visible. Individuals with hidden disabilities—such as neurological, cognitive, sensory, or processing challenges—can choose to wear Sunflower products like lanyards or wristbands to signal that they may need additional time, understanding, or support.
The RMH staff and volunteers trained as Sunflower Ambassadors will be among the first to support the program. These ambassadors, who will wear Sunflower pins to identify themselves, will provide assistance to patients, carers, and families navigating the hospital’s services.
The program is part of RMH’s commitment to fostering inclusion and equity by addressing physical, technological, and attitudinal barriers for people with disabilities.
The launch coincides with an art exhibition on the ground floor of RMH Parkville, featuring works by patients, staff, and consumers.
Among the pieces is a sunflower-inspired painting created by RMH patient Mirisa in collaboration with art therapists during her hospital stay. Mirisa, who lives with a hidden disability, is thrilled that the program is coming to the Parkville Precinct.
“I think it’s great for [staff] to see that and acknowledge that in people, to find kindness, show respect, and let them know they’re not alone—we’re here and we’re supportive.”
The exhibition runs from 8am to 4pm, Monday 2 December to Friday 6 December in the RMH Parkville ground floor foyer.

The roll out of the Sunflower Project at the RMH is made possible through generous donations made to the Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation.
