We're proud to be a workplace that champions diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) for our staff, volunteers, patients and community. A diverse team helps us be more effective, innovative and better able to reflect the community we serve.

We encourage talented people from all backgrounds, abilities and identities to apply for our vacancies. We're happy to discuss any adjustments you may need to support your application.

First Nations employment

We're committed to Reconciliation, self-determination in health care, and removing barriers to First Nations employment. Read our Reconciliation Action Plan.

We offer:

  • Targeted pathways into clinical roles, such as medicine and nursing
  • Ceremonial and cultural leave
  • Cultural support for job applicants and interviews (see First Nations careers)
  • A monthly Mob Gathering for staff across the Parkville precinct

Our First Nations Health Unit and First Nations Governance Group guide our practice and support better outcomes for staff and patients.

Gender equity

We're committed to gender equity across our workforce, including providing:

  • equitable remuneration
  • parental leave for all genders
  • family violence leave
  • flexible work arrangements

Our Gender Equity Committee guides this work, supported by a Sexual Safety Nurse Consultant and Family Violence Contact Officers who help address harassment and support staff safety.

LGBTIQA+ inclusion

We're committed to a workplace where LGBTIQA+ staff feel safe, supported and respected. Our LGBTIQA+ Action Plan is overseen by a dedicated Steering Committee.

  • We were one of the first hospitals in Australia to establish an LGBTIQA+ Patient Liaison Service
  • We partnered with Zoe Belle to develop a Trans and gender-diverse inclusive care guide (PDF) and an eLearning package for staff
  • We support gender affirmation and transition in the workplace
  • We have an annual calendar of events and days of significance for our staff and community to get involved in, including Midsumma, Wear it Purple Day and IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Lesbophobia and Transphobia)

Disability inclusion

We recognise the barriers people with disability can face in employment and career progression. Our Disability Action Plan focuses on attracting and retaining staff with disability, as well as providing inclusive care for patients.

We offer reasonable workplace adjustments throughout recruitment and employment, supported by federal Employment Assistance Fund (EAF) funding.

If your hiring manager can't address an adjustment query, contact our DEI Consultant on (03) 9432 5588.

Cultural and religious diversity

We're proud to employ people from the diverse cultures represented in the communities we serve.

Staff can swap public holidays to align with their own cultural or religious celebrations, and our Cultural Diversity Coordinator and Interpreter Service help us to provide patients with the care and information they need.
