Our Disability Liaison Officers support people with disability, their families and carers access the support, care and treatment they need.

Key points

  • Disability Liaison Officers (DLOs) work with your healthcare teams to provide safer, accessible and more inclusive care during your hospital stay and specialist clinic appointments
  • The DLOs provide advice, guidance and are a point of reference for patients, consumers and carers
  • We can facilitate access to services directly or indirectly impacted by the health emergency

The Disability Liaison Officers (DLOs) at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) help people with disability, their families and carers to use hospital services and access the support, care and treatment they need.

Our DLOs provide advice, guidance and are a point of reference for patients, consumers, carers and members of staff about disability issues and support within the hospital setting. They can facilitate access to services directly or indirectly impacted by the health emergency.

What we do

DLOs support people with disability by:

  • Supporting all people with disability, their families and carers to access all services across the RMH as well as their usual health services
  • Working with your healthcare teams to provide safe, accessible and inclusive care during your hospital stay and specialist clinic appointments
  • Assisting with accessing services such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
  • Being the point of contact for patients, Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) providers, family and carers for inpatient and specialist services
  • Providing information and support for inpatient teams regarding an individual's care needs in hospital and at home
  • Providing support for people with disability, their families and carers in accessing assessment and/or treatment for COVID-19

Inform your healthcare team of your disability

You can now inform your healthcare team of your disability and your specific care needs by following the below instructions:

  1. Upload and/or log in to your Health Hub app
  2. Select ‘Menu’
  3. Scroll down and select ‘Questionnaires’
  4. Select ‘Identification of disability’
  5. Complete questionnaire and ‘submit’

Once completed, your response to the questionnaire will be visible on your medical file for your healthcare team to be aware of.

Answering the questions will help us to provide the best possible health care to you and help us to understand what additional support you may require. The information will be treated confidentially.
