Pharmacy services at the RMH
Our services cover all areas of the organisation and are provided by a great team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
Our services are arranged under the following portfolios:
We provide progressive and innovative clinical pharmacy services to all of our inpatients and specialist clinics.
With many complex specialities and areas of practice in our quaternary referral hospital, the ability to develop clinical skills and knowledge are vast.
We are fully integrated into multidisciplinary teams where our pharmacists provide expert knowledge in medication management.
We are the backbone of the hospital for a range of services related to medication, including:
- Dispensary
- Aseptic production
- Inventory and procurement
- Day infusion centre
- Clinical trials
We are the specialists in Medication Safety, Governance and Stewardship.
With a team of pharmacists overseeing these key roles and supporting key initiatives, our department is instrumental in leading and driving safe and effective medication management across the organisation.
We also have an Education Team who support staff and students through many of our programs and initiatives.
Our organisation is driving the digital health service agenda and medication management is a significant part of this. With a pharmacy team taking this forward we deliver high-quality care to all of our patients using innovative systems and tools.

Grade 1
This is typically for early career hospital pharmacists where you will be able to complete our residency program gaining essential skills in key areas of pharmacy practice.
Grade 2
Having sound clinical and operational skills you will be able to consolidate, specialise and develop. With accredited advanced training residency programs on offer you will be able to take steps in to specialist areas of practice.
Grade 3
As a specialist pharmacist you will lead and drive services and research to your patients using your skills and knowledge. Team management is where you also get to enhance your career and professional development.
Grade 4
Being an expert in an area of practice you will be able to lead pharmacy services and develop others. As part of our leadership team you will be highly regarded and have opportunities to continue progressing the careers of yourself and others.
Pharmacy technicians are critical to taking our department and services forward. We have embraced many new roles, advanced practice and career development to make these roles both rewarding and integrated into our team.
We support candidates to make a career as a pharmacy technician, including those beginning their healthcare career and for those looking to progress and advance.
Throughout your time working with us, you will be able to complete your qualifications in Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support, namely Certificate 3 and 4. Other opportunities are supported for individuals as they take their skills and abilities to the next level.
You will have opportunities to progress through the following:
Grade 1
As you start your new position in this wonderful career, you will be supported in relevant training and qualifications.
Your focus areas of work will be in our inventory and procurement team as you build your foundation knowledge and are supported to develop your skills through undertaking Certificate 3 Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support.
Grade 2
You will consolidate your skills working in our inventory and procurement team or with our dispensary team where you will develop your technical skills and provide medications for our patients.
There are opportunities to work within our aseptic suite where you can prepare medicines for some of our most complex and unwell patients.
Grade 3
Taking you to the next level in advanced roles, you will be supported to complete the Certificate 4 Hospital/Health Services Pharmacy Support and build your leadership skills, training and developing the team, or specialising in advanced roles. The possibilities are endless.
We have a range of these currently in operation, including:
- Technician-led dispensary services – Technician checking program, Renal, TB
- Outpatient clinic services – IBD, Haematology/BMT, Day infusion centre
- Technician-led aseptic services
- Procurement and management of medication inventory
- Digital health
Grade 4
As a senior manager and member of our departments leadership team, you will lead specified portfolios and continue to develop the pharmacy technician profile and advanced roles.
We offer 8 state-funded intern pharmacist positions each year.
Our comprehensive program rotates each intern through general clinical areas, elective specialty practice areas, operations and quality rotations to give our trainees the solid foundation, confidence and skills to build their pharmacy careers.
These are centrally funded by Victoria and recruitment to these is overseen by the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA). See the SHPA website for details, including eligibility criteria, information night sessions, and key dates.
We fully support students in their career and working as part of the pharmacy workforce. Each year we have student placements aligned with local university programs including Monash, LaTrobe and RMIT Universities.
The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA) summer student program is also supported at the RMH and we offer 8 positions. These typically undertake quality and medication safety projects and are held for 4 weeks per successful applicant. This recruitment is through SHPA.
There are also opportunities for students to work for us outside of their studies to build on their skills and knowledge within our operations team. Our current vacancies are advertised via our online jobs portal when available.
For pharmacists undertaking postgraduate studies, we also provide opportunities for placements working alongside our expert pharmacists.
Moving from overseas?
We provide opportunities for pharmacists and technicians to move to Australia and can support you through the registration process. Several of our team have been through this process at the RMH and we have great experience to help you.
Pharmacists will need to meet the requirements of the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
