What we do
The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) is a screening site for the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP).
We provide free (bulk billed) low-dose CT scans for eligible participants to detect early signs of lung cancer:
- Appointments are prioritised daily. Wait times for appointments are very short.
- Scans are reported by our expert Thoracic Radiologists at the RMH
- Primary care providers may refer participants with high-risk findings on their low dose CT scan to our Respiratory Medicine service for further care
Who can use our service
We accept referrals for people who are eligible for the NLCSP.
You are eligible to participate if you:
- are aged between 50 and 70 years
- show no signs or symptoms of lung cancer
- currently smoke or have quit within the past 10 years
- have a history of tobacco cigarette smoking of at least 30 pack-years
Pack-years are calculated by multiplying the number of cigarette packs smoked per day by the number of years the person has smoked.
- One pack a day × 30 years = 30 pack-years
- Two packs a day × 15 years = 30 pack-years

Referrals
To refer a participant for lung cancer screening low-dose CT at the RMH:
- Confirm the participant is eligible
- Enrol the participant via the National Cancer Screening Registry (NCSR) Enrolment Form (PDF) or log in to the National Cancer Screening Registry (NCSR) through your PRODA account
- Complete a request form:

Our team will contact the participant directly to arrange their scan.

After the screening test
Our Respiratory Medicine - Lung Cancer Screening Clinic can evaluate high-risk findings discovered by screening.
To refer participants with category 5 (high risk) or category 6 (very high risk) findings on their low dose CT scans, fax referrals to Specialist Clinics (Outpatients) on (03) 9342 4234.

Speak to your GP or primary healthcare provider if you think you may be eligible for lung cancer screening.
If you are eligible, your GP or primary healthcare provider will need to complete a low dose CT request form and submit it to our team.
Our team will contact you directly to arrange your CT scan when we receive your referral.
