We provide multidisciplinary assessment and surgical treatment for patients with head and neck cancer.

What we do
Our unit brings together surgical expertise from different areas to assess and manage adults with head and neck malignancies. Our unit includes experts in:
- Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
- Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (Ear, Nose and Throat or ENT)
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Cancers we treat
We treat cancers arising from the:
- Oral cavity (lip, tongue, floor of mouth, buccal mucosa)
- Oropharynx (tonsil, base of tongue, soft palate)
- Larynx and hypopharynx
- Salivary glands
- Thyroid and parathyroid glands
- Skull base and sinonasal region
- Skin of the head and neck (melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma [SCC], basal cell carcinoma [BCC])
- Cervical lymph nodes (including unknown primary presentations)
Every patient is reviewed at our weekly multidisciplinary team meeting before treatment planning.
Who can use our service
We accept patients who:
- are adults aged 18 or over
- have a suspected or confirmed head and neck cancer diagnosis
- are referred by a GP or specialist
Paediatric cases are managed through the Royal Children's Hospital.

Referral checklist
In addition to the minimum referral information, include all available:
- imaging results
- biopsy results
- pathology reports
We will still accept and triage referrals where a tissue diagnosis has not yet been received.
How to refer
We accept GP and specialist referrals:
- Use the RMH referral form (PDF) or a template from your own system
- Fax your completed referral to Specialist Clinics (Outpatients) on (03) 9342 4234
We do not accept email referrals.
