What we do

We work closely with each individual patient to develop facial prosthetic solutions.

Our services include:

  • A full spectrum of high cosmesis silicone facial prostheses, including implant retained devices (external and internal referrals accepted for these services)
  • Design and manufacture of specialised dental prostheses
  • Orthognathic dental splints
  • Splints for facial fractures

Dental technology services are only available to patients of the Royal Melbourne Hospital surgical units.

What's involved

The process of making a facial prosthesis involves several visits to the hospital by the patient, in person. Before we can begin the process, the face must be completely healed with no swelling.

Sufficient healing after radiotherapy can typically take three to six months and will vary with the type of prosthesis and retention method.

Patients suitable for an orbital prosthesis (artificial eye) are referred to an ocularist by the Maxillofacial team before making a prosthesis.
