The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) kidney transplant patients can to have their medications posted, or they can come in to collect them at a time that suits them.
Key points
- Patients can have their medications posted to them, or they can come in to collect them from the RMH Outpatient Pharmacy at a time that suits them
- This service removes the need for patients to wait for medications at the hospital pharmacy
This service is designed to help patients obtain their immunosuppression medicines more easily, by removing the need for them to wait for medications at the hospital pharmacy.
Prescriptions are written by a RMH kidney specialist in a clinic or as needed, but instead of waiting to collect medications from the hospital pharmacy, they can be prepared for patients and dispensed:
- By post - we can post to your nominated address in Australia (such as your home or work) at no additional charge
- Via the hospital pharmacy - at a time that suits you
This service is available if you:
- Have had a kidney transplant
- Are being seen by an RMH-affiliated nephrology physician (in public or private practice)
- Have recent blood tests (from less than four months ago) available on our computer system. The request slip must have ‘cc RMHS’ on the pathology form but can be done in any pathology lab
- Have been taking the same medicines for at least a month.
- Supply us with an up-to-date telephone number or email address
If you are eligible for the home delivery of medicines service, you can send us a delivery address and your contact telephone numbers.
Your prescriptions for the relevant medications can be left on file with the hospital pharmacy or we can provide one if you have recently been to clinic.
In our clinic, you request a prescription from your doctor as normal. Leave it on file with us so we can send you a repeat when you request it.
You can obtain a new repeat prescription at your next clinic appointment and leave it on file.
Medications will be ready within five working days of receiving your request. Alternatively, you can collect your medications from outpatients pharmacy during business hours or at other times by prior arrangement.
The RMH's Outpatient Pharmacy can only dispense and deliver your immunosuppression medicine such as tacrolimus, cyclosporine, mycophenolate, prednisolone, everolimus, sirolimus and azathioprine.
No, all other aspects of your care remain unchanged.
You can contact the kidney transplant outpatient pharmacist to help with all aspects of your transplant medication.
We pay the postage for you and the PBS co-payment is invoiced with your medicines ($6.40 for concession patients, $39.50 for general patients per item).
The hospital can often supply more medication on a hospital prescription than you can get locally.
If you have a clinic appointment, you can contact us directly.
If you do not have a clinic appointment, you can still contact the kidney transplant outpatient pharmacist by phone, email or post to assist.
If you are running out of medication and require an urgent supply, please to come to the hospital where we can arrange and urgent prescription and supply it for you.
