What we do
Kidney transplantation at the RMH started in 1963 and we have been at the forefront of this field in Australia ever since.
The RMH Kidney Transplantation Service is one of the largest in the country. We perform more than 100 kidney transplants a year and this makes us the second-largest kidney transplant unit in Australia.
We have pioneered the use of ABO blood group incompatible transplants and specialise in difficult-to-transplant cases. We offer the full range of surgical and immunological therapies and have state-of-the-art antibody removal equipment.
Our transplant results compare favourably with our peers and we have won several health service awards for our kidney transplant activity.
The RMH kidney transplant team comprises experienced and dedicated transplant surgeons, physicians and support staff.
All patients are considered for kidney transplantation and while we cannot guarantee that everyone will be suitable, if we can transplant a kidney for a patient, we will.

Drive innovation
The RMH Kidney Transplantation team has continued to drive innovation in transplantation in Victoria and Australia, using kidneys often discarded by other units with excellent results.
This has included the use of kidneys from donors with acute kidney injury, which is currently being prepared for publication in conjunction with the organ procurement organisation Donate Life Victoria to demonstrate that this is possible and to increase the number of organs available for transplantation.
We would be delighted to talk to you about a referral for kidney transplantation in general or with specific issues in mind and our transplant coordinators are the first port of call. We have a novel kidney transplant medication supply service making management of the post-transplant period easier and more personal.
All patients are considered for kidney transplantation and while we cannot guarantee that everyone will be suitable, if we can transplant your patient, we will tell you.
Living donors
We perform many kidney transplants from living donors. If you wish to refer a relative or friend of your patient to donate a kidney, we would be delighted to talk to you about this.
A donor does not necessarily have to be the same blood group or tissue type or related in any way for us to consider this. Donors should be in good health with normal kidney function for referral and be prepared for extensive testing for us to verify that they are suitable kidney donors.
Our ABO-incompatible (ABOi) transplant program has underpinned the success of the Australian and New Zealand Paired Kidney Exchange (ANZKX) Program, which has been acknowledged and results are published yearly.
We have also now performed some of the first ABOi transplants from deceased donors, opening new avenues for transplanting kidneys and other organs across previously absolute barriers.
