Key points
- • We are a dedicated multidisciplinary team including cardiologists, obstetricians and maternal fetal medicine specialists from the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Royal Women’s Hospital.
- We offer care to women with a cardiac diagnosis who are pregnant and require specialist cardiac assessment or treatment during their pregnancy
- We offer pre-natal assessment to women with a cardiac diagnosis who wish to become pregnant
What we do
The Cardiac Pregnancy Clinic service is a multidisciplinary service.
Patients are reviewed together by a small team of specialists from the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) and the Royal Women’s Hospital (the Women's).
Ongoing liaison between specialists at the RMH and the Women's is often needed depending on individual needs.
Clinic availability
The Cardiac Pregnancy Clinic is run monthly at the RMH Parkville. Patients may be seen at other times depending on need.
Who can use our service
This clinic is suitable for women with congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, aortopathy and valvular heart disease who are:
- contemplating conception and seeking counselling
- requiring care in pregnancy
Patients must have an existing cardiac diagnosis to be eligible for evaluation and management in this clinic. Patients with symptoms but without a cardiac diagnosis require workup by their obstetric team.
We will also accept referrals for patients who:
- reside outside our catchment area
- have obstetric care planned or booked at alternate sites to the Women’s, including in both public and private maternity services
Depending on the severity of maternal cardiac disease, patients may be advised to deliver at a different obstetric service than they originally planned.
