Who was John Perrett?
John Perrett was a local Melbourne man, pharmacist, investor, cricket fan and philanthropist. He was a former dialysis patient at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) who eventually underwent a lifesaving kidney transplant.
John's transplant gave him another 30 years of life – a gift he never took for granted. He knew firsthand the challenges faced by people with kidney disease, and that medical research, excellent clinicians and ongoing care were pivotal to his continued good health.
When he died in 2020 at age 86, John generously gave a record donation to the RMH, bequeathing $17.5 million in his will to the RMH Department of Nephrology.
John Perrett's gift and legacy
John Perrett's incredible donation allowed the RMH to purchase the equipment and furnishings for the state-of-the-art kidney care and dialysis centre located at the RMH Elizabeth St, which opened in 2023.
In recognition of his transformational generosity, the centre was named in his honour as the John Perrett Kidney Centre.
Part of his donation also established the John Perrett Bequest Philanthropic Fund to invest in priority projects and innovation in nephrology, and the John Perrett Kidney Donor Centre to support those considering living kidney donation.
Your kidneys are vital part of your body. Without kidneys, you would struggle to process toxins. Overloading your body with toxins has a terrible impact on your health.
We conduct research for kidney diseases and transplantation. If you'd like to support our research work, donate now.
