The Transit Lounge will arrange medical transport for patients with clinical needs. We can also help to arrange taxi services at the patient’s expense.

Going home after hospital discharge

It’s essential for your family members or caregivers to plan for your return home before your discharge. We recommend doing this when you are admitted to allow for a smooth transition from our care back to your home.

Please work with your family or caregivers to make the necessary arrangements so you can be discharged on the scheduled date and time.

For information on getting to or from the RMH Parkville by car or public transport, see:

Non-emergency patient transport

Non-emergency patient transport (NEPT) is a service we provide for patients who need clinical monitoring, care or supervision during transport, but do not require an emergency ambulance.

These patients will:

  • require specialised clinical care or monitoring during their transport, which is delivered by staff with appropriate clinical skills and qualifications, or
  • have an illness or a disability that means they need to be transported safely in a stretcher vehicle (for example, severe immobility or disorientation)

NEPT must booked by an authorised health professional. Patients cannot book NEPT.

Authorised health professionals must contact the Transit Lounge at least one week before the patient's appointment so we can assess the application to use the NEPT service.

Ride share and taxi services

To help with safe transportation home, for eligible patients we may arrange ride share services such as Uber or traditional taxi services.

Please note that Uber requires all riders to agree to its terms and conditions before a ride is provided.

When ride share and taxi services are used, only essential non-treatment identifying information will be shared with and stored by the transportation provider to facilitate safe transit.

Alternative transport options

There are alternative transport options for patients who:

  • are not eligible for NEPT or
  • do not wish to use a ride share or taxi service or do not accept the ride share provider's associated terms and conditions
