How AI is used in research

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in research practice and is rapidly becoming commonplace. Many researchers now use AI‑enabled tools as part of their everyday work.

Commonly used AI tools include Large Language Models (LLMs), such as chat‑based systems. AI is often built into everyday software, including search engines, word processors and email platforms. In research, AI is used to support tasks such as:

  • Transcribing audio
  • Drafting research documents and publications
  • Developing interview questions and participant information
  • Reviewing literature, generating hypotheses and analysing data

In many cases, AI functions like a research assistant, supporting but not replacing researcher judgement. The NHMRC recognises that Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) need guidance on reviewing research that involves AI. Some uses of AI may raise additional ethical considerations for research participants.

My project involves the use of AI

  1. Download and review the NHMRC's Guide for Assessing Research Involving Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Large Language Model Technology (collectively "AI")
  2. If your intended use of AI is non‑routine (as defined in the Guide) complete the AI Questionnaire (pages 5–9 of the Guide), and submit with your ethics application.

Ethics

All research in Australia involving human participants is reviewed by an independent group called a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC). The ethical aspects of this research study have been approved by the Royal Melbourne Hospital HREC.

This study is being carried out according to the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007). This statement protects the interests of people who agree to participate in human research studies.
