Medical education offers a wide range of educational opportunities working in collaboration with key stakeholders, internal and external experts and simulation.

Feedback and Assessment processes are in place for each rotation. These will be emailed to you and sent to your supervisor throughout your rotation.

The forms are based on the Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors (developed by the Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Education Councils). The forms outline the learning outcomes required by junior doctors to be achieved during their clinical rotation. Junior medical staff have the opportunity to self assess against the 11 targeted outcomes along with 3 goals.

The hospital has a strong ethos of support and mentoring and as such, incorporates this into your rotations with assessment forms completed in conference with your supervisor. This provides each doctor the opportunity to discuss issues, ask questions, look at career options as well as develop professional links and relationships with senior staff.

Accompanying this is a supportive medical education team who have an open door policy and encourage all junior medical staff to contact them with any concerns, suggestions or even just for a chat.

Evaluation processes are in place for each educational intervention and rotation.

Evaluation is an integral part in how the medical education shapes rotations, programs and other initiatives. These provide you with an outlet to raise issues that may be of concern to you as well as providing an opportunity to suggest new and innovative educational ideas that can be incorporated in the future.

Currently the hospital uses a customised Postgraduate Hospital Educational Environment Measure (PHEEM), which was developed after trials in the United Kingdom and provides a detailed and comparative assessment of intern hospital experiences.

Evaluation comes in the form of written, online and audience response systems. You will be asked to complete several surveys throughout the year to help us to find out how you’re going. 

Intern orientation:
The intern hospital orientation encompasses a week of lectures, practical skills, EMR and safe prescribing training; and shadowing to make the transition from medical student to intern as smooth as possible.

Doctors in Training:
Our new Doctors in Training (DiT) intakes in February and August are provided with a morning orientation and welcome to the RMH before starting on the wards. The orientation involves the RMH-specific clinical information, tips and tricks from other DiTs and EMR training.

Medical Officers in Charge:
For our Medical Officers in Charge (MOIC) there is an orientation facilitated by two senior medical consultants providing information, support, and escalation guidance to support our after-hours doctors.

Unit orientation:
Each unit conducts their own specific orientation. At these orientation sessions you will receive a Unit Handbook or Guide from the Department and a Rolling Handover Document (ROVER) which has been created by interns for interns. You will be encouraged to amend the ROVER as required to ensure a smooth transition for the following interns.

Online resources:
Learning Hub contains orientation material which can be accessed at your own leisure. As each day passes more and more content is being added to the eLearning platform, providing you with all the material you need in one location.

Supervision

A dedicated Supervisor of Intern Training and Director Clinical Training are appointed for mentoring and support for our junior medical staff.

Their roles include:

• Supporting professional development programs
• Providing counselling and career guidance
• Facilitating performance feedback
• Liaising with supervisors of training at rural locations
• Advocacy for junior doctors
• Ensuring all relevant staff work according to the values of the RMH

Mentoring and Career Guidance

All members of the Medical Education Unit are available to help you throughout the year on career planning, feedback and work/life balance.

We have a U&Me Mentor Program where Doctors in Training apply to be a mentor to new doctors at the RMH. All interns are matched with a mentor, and DiTs are able to opt in to this program. This is an opportunity to ask questions, have a coffee and build your network.

For our Basic Physician Trainees, we have several specialist consultants who have volunteered to be career mentors and offer advice and guidance to best prepare junior medical staff for vocational training.
