The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Clinical School coordinates medical elective requests from Australian and overseas medical students in addition to teaching medical students from the University of Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne's Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School works in partnership with the RMH to coordinate all incoming medical student elective placements.
Our placements are only available to actively enrolled medical students who are in the final 2 years of their medical degree. The length of electives are a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks. Per department we only offer a maximum of 4 weeks.
We do not offer electives in paediatrics, obstetrics or gynaecology placements. For information on these placements, see the University of Melbourne Medical School Clinical Elective website.
Current status of elective placements
Elective applications for 2024 and 2025 have closed (excluding neurosurgery). Any applications sent in will not be considered or refunded the application fee.
The Neurosurgery department is only accepting applications for 2025. See the information guide (PDF) for instructions.

Application processing times
Applications for 2025 will be processed between Monday 30 September 2024 and Friday 17 January 2025. During this time, we require your patience as we work through all application forms.
We will endeavour to process yours as quickly as possible. Please refrain from sending repeat emails as this will delay our response time.
