The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Clinical School coordinates medical elective requests from Australian and overseas medical students in addition to teaching medical students from the University of Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne's Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School works in partnership with the RMH to coordinate all incoming medical student elective placements.
Our placements are only available to actively enrolled medical students who are in the final 2 years of their medical degree.
The length of electives are a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks. Per department we only offer a maximum of 4 weeks.
We do not offer electives in paediatrics, obstetrics or gynaecology placements.

Second round elective placements 2026 have now closed
Thank you for the strong interest shown in our second round of elective applications.
Due to an exceptionally high volume of applications and limited placement availability, we have closed this application round earlier than anticipated. At this time, all available elective placements have been filled and we are no longer able to accept further applications.

We do not accept or refund late applications
Application fees are non-refundable. Any applications sent in after applications close on 31 January 2026 will not be considered or refunded the application fee.
Application processing times
Second round applications for 2026 will be processed between 2 February 2026 and 31 March 2026.
