The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Clinical School coordinates medical elective requests from Australian and overseas medical students in addition to teaching medical students from the University of Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne's Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School works in partnership with the RMH to coordinate all incoming medical student elective placements.
Our placements are only available to actively enrolled medical students who are in the final 2 years of their medical degree.
The length of electives are a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks. Per department we only offer a maximum of 4 weeks.
We do not offer electives in paediatrics, obstetrics or gynaecology placements.

Elective applications for 2027
Elective positions for January to June 2027 are closed. We will not be accepting any more applications.
Any applications sent in for January to June 2027 placement will not be considered or refunded.
Elective applications – second half of 2027
Applications for elective placements in the second half of 2027 are projected to open in November 2026.
Due to a high volume of enquiries, the application opening date has been delayed. Our team is working as quickly as possible to respond to enquiries and process current applications. We are also working to improve our processes to better support elective applicants.
