At the Royal Melbourne Hospital, we instil our values in everything we do. We put people first, lead with kindness and work together to excel as one RMH.
At the RMH we’re inspired by our vision of Advancing health for everyone, every day.
While we’re each going about our different roles, we’re united by a shared understanding of the way we do things around here.
We call it The Melbourne Way.
Doing things 'The Melbourne Way'

Hear some of our people describe what 'the Melbourne Way' means to them.
On screen: clips of our people working and interacting with other staff and patients.
Person 1: "The Melbourne Way to me would be the opportunity to embrace the differences of all cultural aspects within our organisation. There is so many different stories to hear and tell, and to listen to those stories and to hear those stories is what brings me to work every day."
Person 2: "We work with people with really, really complex needs so part of my role is being flexible in my service delivery and understanding the whole person so that I can promote good outcomes for the people in our community that really need it."
Person 3: "When I come to work, I always know that somebody is there to have my back. We work as a community or as a family. We understand that we have a common goal and that is to care for the patients that come through our doors. We create an environment where you are encouraged to speak up, so you never feel discouraged."
Person 4: "I love what I do because I can see the fruit of it. It’s patient monitoring, it's ventilator. When you see it being used on a patient or making someone’s life easier, I'm so passionate about what I do because of that."
Person 5: "The Royal Melbourne is such a supportive workplace. It encourages teamwork. We're a group of brilliant people who love what we're doing. And we're all working along with the same vision, which is to look after the community. And we're never certified with the bare minimum, we always strive for excellence."
Person 6: "We're all on the same page in terms of leadership, working as a team, and the way I look at it is, it's more so looking at the person rather than the medical condition that they have. And just obviously having the respect, the dignity and compassion towards them and ensuring that they have some sort of say in their decision of their health, in the sense if something is wrong that you are able to have that voice."
Person 7: "If I was to put it together, it’s being able to deliver excellent care to our patients in an organisation that proudly recognises those human values of kindness and compassion, not just towards our patients but towards one another regardless of our expertise and titles, and I think that is very important."
Person 8: "Leadership is a form of working together and being collaborative and the kindness that you have to respect anyone. No matter what their role is or their experience, they have something valuable to contribute, is what I see every day. From not just consultants and junior doctors or medical students, but beyond doctors to other health professionals or members of the team, really valuing everyone's position in the team and how they can contribute to that person that they're looking after."
Person 9: "This is the Melbourne Way. It's a high standard but it's the one we set for ourselves here at the Royal Melbourne Hospital to make sure we are a great place to work and a great place to receive care the Melbourne way is our guide the way we do things around here to inspire us and help us realise our vision to advance health for everyone every day."
