Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses often characterised by a preoccupation with eating and exercise, and distorted thoughts and emotions about body image.

Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses; they are not a lifestyle choice.

These disorders can be characterised by a preoccupation with eating, exercise and body weight or shape.

Distorted thoughts and emotions about body image and self-worth can lead to major changes in eating and exercise behaviours. These behaviours may include:

  • Excessive dieting
  • Fasting
  • Overexercising
  • Using medications
  • Vomiting
  • Binge eating

An unhealthy relationship with food is often an attempt to deal with emotional issues such as low self-esteem or negative feelings.
