The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Clinical School coordinates medical elective requests from Australian and overseas medical students in addition to teaching medical students from the University of Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne's Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School works in partnership with the RMH to coordinate all incoming medical student elective placements.
Our placements are only available to actively enrolled medical students who are in the final 2 years of their medical degree.
The length of electives are a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks. Per department we only offer a maximum of 4 weeks.
We do not offer electives in paediatrics, obstetrics or gynaecology placements.

Elective placements 2026 now closed
We received an exceptionally high volume of applications for 2026 electives. At this time the RMH elective placements have been mostly filled for 2026 and we are no longer able to accept further applications.
We are now only accepting expressions of interest for elective placements in selected specialist units:
- Neurosurgery
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

We do not accept or refund late applications
Application fees are non-refundable. Any applications sent in after applications close on 31 January 2026 will not be considered or refunded the application fee.
2027 placement applications
We are not currently accepting applications for placements in 2027 and beyond.
