The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Clinical School coordinates medical elective requests from Australian and overseas medical students in addition to teaching medical students from the University of Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne's Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School works in partnership with the RMH to coordinate all incoming medical student elective placements.
Our placements are only available to actively enrolled medical students who are in the final 2 years of their medical degree.
The length of electives are a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks. Per department we only offer a maximum of 4 weeks.
We do not offer electives in paediatrics, obstetrics or gynaecology placements.

Elective applications for 2027
- Applications open: Wednesday 8 July 2026
- Elective period: January to June 2027 only (in this first round)
- Applications close: Friday 24 July 2026 11:59pm
Any applications sent in after applications close or for placement outside the elective period will not be considered or refunded the application fee.

Processing times
Applications will be processed between Monday 27 July and Friday 18 September 2026.
During this time, we require your patience as we work through all application forms. We endeavour to process yours as quickly as possible.
