The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) Clinical School coordinates medical elective requests from Australian and overseas medical students in addition to teaching medical students from the University of Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne's Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School works in partnership with the RMH to coordinate all incoming medical student elective placements.
Our placements are only available to actively enrolled medical students who are in the final 2 years of their medical degree.
The length of electives are a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 8 weeks. Per department we only offer a maximum of 4 weeks.
We do not offer electives in paediatrics, obstetrics or gynaecology placements.

Second round elective placements for 2026 now open
After completing our initial processing and giving careful consideration to placement availability, we are pleased to announce that a second round of elective applications is now open.
The application window will remain open from 15 December 2025 to 31 January 2026.
Placements between September to November 2026 only
Applications are strictly available for elective placements occurring from September 2026 to November 2026, with limited spaces available for July and August 2026. Check that your preferred placement dates fall within these periods before you apply, as the application fee is non-refundable.

We are not currently accepting applications for 2027 and beyond. Please refer to this webpage for updates on when application periods will open for 2027.

Application fees are non-refundable. Any applications sent in after applications close on 31 January 2026 will not be considered or refunded the application fee.
Application processing times
Second round applications for 2026 will be processed between 2 February 2026 and 31 March 2026.
