The Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School coordinates medical elective requests from Australian and overseas medical students in addition to teaching medical students from The University of Melbourne.
The University of Melbourne, Royal Melbourne Hospital Clinical School has a current agreement with The Royal Melbourne Hospital to coordinate all incoming medical student elective placements. Our placements are only available to enrolled medical students who are in the final two years of their current medical degree.
Current status of elective placements
Note: The electives coordinator will be on leave for six months this year. Elective applications are closed as of 30 January 2023. Any applications received from February to April will be deleted.
|2023 elective placements||Places are fully booked for 2023. We are no longer accepting 2023 applications.|
|2024 elective placements||We will be accepting applications for 2024 between April and June 2023. Please submit your application during this window. You will not receive a response until the electives coordinator returns from leave in late July|
Please note that any applications received for dates that are not indicated as being open will be deleted.
Our elective placements are clinically based allocations. Students will be expected to participate in the activities of the unit while under the supervision of hospital staff, where there will be many opportunities to engage in clinical activities in relation to patient assessment and patient care. Although there may be opportunities to attend current tutorials, the University of Melbourne does not provide assessment or formal teaching sessions related to your approved elective placement.
How to apply
Please read the RMH Elective Information Guide carefully before you apply.
We do not offer electives in paediatrics, obstetrics or gynaecology placements. Information on these placements is available on the Melbourne Medical School Clinical Elective website.
All elective placements are now only available for a maximum of eight weeks only, and a minimum of two weeks. We will try our best to accommodate your first preference; however, due to the number of applications we receive, we cannot guarantee that the clinical placements requested will always be available.
If after reading our guide you believe you are suitable for an elective here at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, please complete the application form and submit via email with other documents as listed on the form to the Electives Coordinator. Please note that incomplete applications will be deleted without a response.
