Music Therapy welcomes volunteers who wish to come in and play music in general areas of the hospital.

Our music volunteer program provides high quality live music in various public locations throughout the hospital. The performances aim to positively enhance the hospital’s atmosphere, environment and experience for patients, consumers, families, visitors and staff.

Play music

We are interested in, and welcome, musical diversity, eclectic genres and instruments and encourage people from all cultural and musical backgrounds to apply and participate. We welcome individuals and musical groups, both large and small.

Eligibility and auditioning

To be eligible to be part of the music volunteer team, you need to commit to a minimum of performing once a month for the duration of 6 months. However, we do support one-off visits for ensembles and community choirs.

All potential individual and group music volunteers need to present for an interview and audition. If successful, the music volunteer will then undergo onsite training.

Once training has been completed, the music volunteer will then be eligible to perform in designated public locations throughout the hospital as directed by the music therapy staff. Music volunteers play in general hospital areas and not at patient’s bedsides. One-off visits from choirs and ensembles will be required to provide visual representation of performance.

All potential music volunteers will need to undergo a police check and submit relevant documentation, such as police checks, working with children checks, and immunisation status.

Your music

Your musical repertoire needs to be generally calming, relaxing and uplifting. The repertoire also needs to be approved by music therapy staff. The baseline expectation is 30 minutes of well-rehearsed music, of approximately 10 songs. The usual music volunteer session duration is one to two hours.

Music volunteers are able perform Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm.

Help in other ways

Volunteers with skills in other areas such as studio production and engineering or administration are also welcome.
