Falls in hospital can occur due to the unfamiliar environment, when you are feeling unwell and when you are taking certain medications.
Before you come to hospital
Make sure you bring the following items with you for your hospital stay:
- Your glasses
- Your hearing aids
- Your walking stick or frame (labelled with your name)
- Your current medications and tablets – these will be checked while you are in hospital
- Appropriate footwear (comfortable flat non-slip shoes with laces or Velcro to fasten them on your feet)
Choosing safe footwear to prevent falls
Footwear plays an important role in reducing the risk of slips, trips and falls. This patient information brochure highlights key features to look for when choosing safe shoes.
While you are in hospital
When you're admitted, we'll ask if:
- you've had any falls in the last year
- you have difficulty with your feet or legs, or problems with your balance
- you're more drowsy, confused or dizzy than usual
- you have times when you need to go to the toilet urgently
If any of these apply, we'll talk with you about your individual falls prevention plan.
If you're identified as being at risk of falling, you may see a symbol placed above your bed to alert staff (see Identification bands).
What you and your family can do
- Ask your nurse, doctor or treating team about your falls risk and prevention plan. You can use the patient bedside whiteboard to share information or ask questions with your care team at any time
- Call, don't fall. Use the call button if you need help when moving or walking, or need to go to the toilet. Ask staff for assistance and wait until they come to help you
- Take your time when getting up from sitting or lying down and let staff know if you feel unwell or unsteady on your feet
- Look out for hazards that may cause a fall, such as spills and clutter, and tell staff about them as soon as you notice them
- Wear comfortable non-slip shoes that fit you well
